From Passion to Practicality

When I first got into drones, I was fascinated by the technology itself.
The flying.
The cameras.
The idea that a small aircraft could completely change the way we see the world. But as the years have gone on, and as CDM Drones has grown, I’ve realised something even more exciting:
Drones aren’t just cool technology anymore. They’re becoming real tools that solve real problems. That’s where my focus has started to shift. Lately, we’ve been diving deeper into stockpile calculations, waste facility management, volumetric analysis, and site monitoring. These are industries where accurate data matters and where traditional methods can take huge amounts of time, money, and labour. A drone can now survey an entire quarry, landfill, or stockpile area in a fraction of the time it once took.
More importantly, it can do it safely. That’s one of the biggest things I’ve noticed while working around active sites: the amount of risk that can be reduced simply by keeping people off unstable ground, away from machinery, or out of hazardous environments.
At CDM Drones, we’re starting to see how powerful aerial data can be when it’s combined with practical decision-making. It’s not just about taking nice photos anymore, it’s about
understanding remaining landfill capacity, tracking stockpile movement, measuring cut and fill volumes, monitoring environmental change, and helping businesses make faster, more informed decisions.
One of the projects we’ve recently been involved in was a detailed drone survey and volume analysis for a waste facility. Seeing the amount of insight that could be generated from a single capture really reinforced why this technology matters and honestly, this feels like just the beginning. The drone industry is moving incredibly fast, and every few months there’s new software, new workflows, and new ways to process and visualise data. That’s what keeps it exciting for me. I still approach this industry with the same mindset I had as a teenager learning about drones for the first time: stay curious, keep learning, and don’t be afraid to try new things.
CDM Drones is growing into something bigger than I ever imagined back then and I’m excited to keep sharing the journey.
More field days ahead.
